Luck doesn't always come easy...

Jaz “Lady Luck” Archer doesn’t believe in knights. If she did, she wouldn’t be the hero of her tale, no matter what the illusionist Dante Grimm believes.

Grimm has seen through her carefully constructed lies—that the death of her sister was an unfortunate accident—and now, to make up for Jaz’s past, she must find a lost artifact. Combined with its legendary counterparts, the superbike artifact will hold back a world filled with monsters.

Grimm makes a convincing case, but Jaz doesn’t believe in heroes, she doesn’t believe in magical motorbikes either. All that changes with an accidental death at Jaz’s casino and the arrival of the alluring, Siobhan—A woman who appears to be able to bring the dead back to life.

Siobhan makes Jaz an offer she cannot refuse Jaz’s sister’s life for Grimm’s artifact.

To claim the bike, Jaz must return to the street racing crew she abandoned and rekindle her talent for speed. Only then will the true test begin. A battle of wills and of lies, for the mysterious Siobhan is not who, or what, she claims to be.

Jaz doesn’t believe in myths and legends, but they believe in her, and they’ll stop at nothing to see the veil fall once again.

Arthurian myth meets urban fantasy in this new series from Rowan Casey!

Run of Luck Veil Knights Volume 4 Rowan Casey 9781543091625 Books

Run of Luck, book 5 of the Veil Knights series, is the best yet. Lady Luck, Jaz Archer, former illegal street racer and casino owner, is edgy and complex. She confronts the unexpected revelation of her knighthood with a tangled host of personal issues, not the least of which is the death of her sister. Jaz has always had the ability to manipulate luck, but she hasn't always used her ability wisely. When Grimm tasks her with retrieving an artifact Jaz is forced to face her past, the decisions she's made and whether she will continue on her current path or finally do what it takes to make things right. During the course of her quest she is forced to ally with former friends who were more like family. But when monsters emerge from the shadows to challenge her she has to decide whether she can sacrifice what she loves for the greater good.
Jaz's story is well written with plenty of twists and turns and unexpected surprises.

Run of Luck Veil Knights Volume 4 Rowan Casey 9781543091625 Books Reviews

This is a very strong installment in the Veil Knights series. A motorcycle street racer with the magical ability to manipulate luck suffers a tragedy and takes refuge running a casino. But when the enigmatic wizard Dante Grimm sends her on a quest to retrieve an artifact that has taken the form of a mystic motorcycle, she returns to her crew and the dangerous illegal street racing life. An agreement with a not-quite-human to "make things right" turns out to be a hard bargain that forces Jaz Archer to risk everything. This is a five star book that gets one star knocked off because it needs one more pass by a line editor to remove typos. But structurally, the story is solid. The primary characters are well-motivated and complex, the protagonist's tragic past has a direct relevance to the current story, there are several surprises and plot twists, and the action scenes, both racing through the streets of LA and combatting scary monsters, absolutely ROCK! And that's primarily why I read these stories. I'm not a fan of the illegal street racing lifestyle because of its disregard for the lives and safety of innocent commuters, but the author definitely did some homework and communicated the "outlaw family" rapport really well. The emotional resonance between characters is an added plus. A few allies are particularly well developed, though a couple of the race crew are underdeveloped, especially a rival girl. [SPOILER ALERT] I'm still not quite sure who the mysterious Liam really was, or even IF he was. [END SPOILER ALERT.] The magic system involving the manipulating of luck is very interesting. It's both a blessing and a curse, and always dangerous. Her partial awakening to her previous life as a Veil Knight is well integrated into the story. Dante Grimm's minor role is just perfect, true to character. As a devoted fan of the series, I've finally figured out that the various "artifacts" the knights are collecting are not just pieces of a key but symbolic and perhaps actual personal weapons for the big battle to come. There's no way I want to miss ANY of these books. It's a good idea to start with the first, then the rest could be read in any order...at least so far.
The story itself is good. The editing, alas, is evil. Horrible. On almost every page, there's at least one mistake. A character switches gender, first-person changes to third-person for one sentence, the wrong form of a word is used... Its atrocious, and distracting as hell.

Characters who are supposed to be people the main character cares about are given so little pagetime that I didn't care what happened to them; furthermore, the scenes they did have were bland, and felt like the author was trying too hard to make me like these people.

I give this book three stars more because I enjoyed the previous books so much. We're this a stand-alone, I would have rated this novel much more harshly. Here's hoping the next book in the Veil Knights series is better.
I couldn't get into this one. Didn't take to the protagonist or the plot, couldn't see how she fit in with the Arthur's Knights theme. Maybe if I'd actually finished it, that would have become clear - but I decided it wasn't worth plowing through.
Read all in series order.
I really hate to get to the end of the book. I now it's not possible, but I wish this series would never end.
Very readable. Kept my interest through plot and dialogue. You can tell the series is a product of different authors but it doesn’t detract. Touches that “Maybe I am a secret special person” common wish.
Each installment of the Veil Knights gets more strange and also more prophetic. Whatever your concept of the future of humanity, these books tell a haunting yet all-too-true reality for us all. These books keep you reading while looking back over your shoulder to see if one of the bad guys in these books just might be behind you, ready to take a bite out of you.
